How to communicate and work with people living in Germany?

28.05.2018 15:00

The Dos and Don’ts of cross-cultural communication by Claudia Ulbrich.

We invite everyone to Claudia Ulbrich's lecture The Dos and Don’ts of cross-cultural communication – how to communicate and work with people living in Germany, which will be held on May 28, 2018 at 15:00 in the 8th Academic building of KNRTU-KAI (Kazan, Chetaeva St., 18a).

Germany is well-known for its high standards in economics and education. On a global scale, it ranks 3rd place of exporting goods abroad right after China and the USA. The country has been developing durable relationships with most other economies in the world and is also one of the strongest members of the European Union. Following the US and UK, young people favor Germany, when it comes to choosing their education. German universities welcome more than 300.000 foreign students every year, which means every 9th student is from another country.

So, on the one hand there must be something that helps people in Germany to be successful in the way they work. But what are these fundamental principles underlying a prosperous work ethic? And how are they applied in everyday contexts? On the other hand, international newcomers and business partners face the (daily) challenge of how to communicate and work with people living in Germany. What do they need to know about social codes, moral standards, and decent behavior that are important to many German people? And what should they rather avoid?

This lecture provides an overview of the fundamental principles and mechanisms, which habitually structure work processes in German companies and at universities. Rooted in scientific findings and personal experience, the talk sheds a light upon some of the essential values and the in-/visible rules, which lie at the core of communication in work settings all over Germany. Through a number of examples, these rules and values will be illuminated in more detail.
